Looking across the Pond it seems that some right wing politicians in America have a lot in common with those in the UK. They all seem well capable of putting their foot where their mouths should be and causing offence. So who is it this time?

Missouri Republican Todd Akin is the culprit. Classed by most as far-right he is an experienced politician and so naivity cannot be his excuse. The six-term congressman is running against incumbent Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill, in the US 2012 Election.

Interviewers do sometimes run rings around politicians of any leaning but there are some gaffes which show voters just what said politicians believe. In an interview Todd was asked if "there were any circumstances in which he would support a woman's decision to have an abortion." A reasonable question to put to an anti-abortionist who sees the World in black and white, whereas we all know it is many shades of grey, and we are not referring to the sex book.

His answer?  Well it seems that he believes it is "really rare" for a woman who is raped to get pregnant. How come, I hear you ask? Well according to Todd "It seems to me first of all from what I understand from doctors that's really rare. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Does this mean then that if a woman who is raped gets pregnant it was not rape or that she enjoyed the experience? 65-year-old Todd seems to be saying that.

In much the same words as Rick Santorum used during his efforts to be elected as the GOP nominee Mr Akin went on to say that IF the birth of a child follows a rape he would prefer "the rapist was attacked and not the child".

The GOP dream team of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan were quick to distance themselves from Akin's words. A spokesperson soon claimed that both Romney and Ryan would not be against abortion in rape cases.

Akin retracted his words, in a way. We have no idea which words he realised after the event were inappropriate, to say the least. He said "In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year." He did not give details.

Opinion: Too little, too late Mr Akin. There are many justified reasons, including rape, why an abortion could be right for a woman. Why a 65-year-old politician should think he has the right to decide which are justified and which are not is beyond us.

Even before today, August 4, 2012, begun it was being called Super Saturday. Apparently the Saturday which is in the middle of the Olympics is often remarkable. Olympic medals flow, often toward team GB as events which the UK excel in are held.

One of the stand out events today though has to have been the women's Triathlon. The participants in this grueling race gave it their all. First the girls swam 1.5km in the Serpentine Lake in Hyde Park. Thousands of sports fans enjoyed the "free event". They then set off on a 43km cycle ride which was followed by a 10km run. The front runners even had the energy and strength to sprint to the finish. An amazing event which truly tests the stamina of those taking part.

One thing that has been more noticeable during the London 2012 Olympics is the amount of professional sports people taking part. At one time the ideal of the Olympics was geared toward amateurs. Somehow including professional footaball and tennis players, fo,r example feels wrong.

Similarly seeing the likes of Michael Phelps and Mark Cavendish featuring in commercials already being aired on UK TV does not sit well. The Games are not even over and people are cashing in.

Team GB have cause to celebrate today though having rapidly climbed the medals table to third place, behind the USA and China. For a small country though the UK is doing well. Whether it can maintain its momentum remains to be seen. Certainly Super Saturday included events Team GB were happy to compete in, and ultimately were successful in.

At time of writing the Olympic medal count for team GB has not lived up to expectations. Of course the pressure is high on Olympians from the host nation but in the past that has served to apparently uplift competitors and improve their medal tally. Not so in 2012 for team GB. Still it is early days.

In 2008 team GB came fourth in the medals table. They followed China, the USA and then Russia. So how are things going so far?

Currently the UK is only just on the medals table, in 20th place. They have won 2 bronze, and one silver. Already previous team GB winners have competed and lost out. Perhaps London 2012 is just going to be dogged with peculiarities and problems. It certainly has had more than its fair share of back room problems to date.

China leads the table with a total of 17 medals. The USA has the same total number of medals but less are gold. China has nine gold medals and the USA five. France, North Korea and Italy follow. Russia trails behind in seventh place.

UK Olympian hopeful Tom Daley and partner were pushed into fourth place in the diving. The pair were expected to win a medal. Tom's diving partner Peter Waterfield admitted the fault was his but these things happen in sport. Better luck next time.

Team GB quest for Gold continues.

BBC coverage of the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics began at 9pm July 27, 2012. Music ranging from the Sex Pistols to classical accompanied views of the UK. The count down to the London 2012 Olympics had begun in earnest,

The man to ring the huge Olympic bell was Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins. With such a recent win that was fitting. Then it was traditional singing by children. William Blake's Jerusalem was sung with a backdrop of pastoral England, country cricket and all. Danny Boy was next for Ireland followed by The flower of Scotland. It was Wales then before it was back to the end of Jerusalem.

The London 2012 Olympics is due to start in less than three weeks. Preparations are almost complete and the huge cost of the Olympics has yet to be revealed. In the 21st Century one extreme cost will be the price of security. However it seems that for London 2012 there could be a human and personal cost too.

Residents in a tower block of flats in London learned that the UK military were planning to site surface to air missiles on top of the flats for the duration of the Olympics. Imagine. A letter drops through your door to tell that you are going to be a sitting target during the Olympics. Perhaps some tenants of the Fred Wigg council flats found out at the last minute. Who knows?

There will be six locations used by the miltary during the Olympics. Notably none are on the roofs of homes of politicians, Parliament or the aristocracy. Who would believe we were living in the 21st Century? In so many ways the UK is beginning to go backward.

Obviously the tenants were far from happy at the news that they and their homes had no value. Pretty it up however you like but that is the fact plain and simple. Yesterday it was revealed that they were to try and launch a judicial review.

Today July 10, 2012, the latest news is that has been refused. What a surprise, we don't think.

The MoD claim that positioning the missiles on the 17 storey flats would be appropriate and proportionate. The residents insist they would make the flats a potential terrorist target.

Justice Haddon-Cave took the side of the MoD. He said the tenants did not have a reason for a legal challenge and that they were under a misapprehension as to the sort of missiles to be used.

There has been talk that perhaps the flats will be a decoy with missiles stationed elsewhere or just a ploy with no missiles used. In any case the tenants could be under threat. Perhaps Justice Haddon-Cave would like to move into the Tower block for the duration of the Olympics in order to put his money where his mouth is. Philip Hammond, UK Defence Secretary, and MoD officials could join him.

The location of the six sites is public knowledge as the image below shows. The Judge congratulated the MoD on the way it had behaved when consulting the tenants of Fred Wigg House. Ah where but the UK?

According to the BBC, the decision was signed off by the prime minister, deputy prime minister, home secretary and defence secretary in "defence of the realm". The tenants maintain that siting the missiles on their homes, breaches Article 8 and Article 1 of Protocol 1 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Of course in the Uk the authorities only seem able to uphold the rights of foreign nationals and not its own UK citizens.

Suggestion: Perhaps the missiles are needed. So let the government draw up a contract with those involved. One that pays for other accommodation for them during the Olympics. One that pays an additional sum of money for the inconvenience of leaving their home. One that guarantees to pay for any damage or loss of goods and home should an attack happen.

Then, and only then should they ask the residents if they will agree. The UK a free country? Is it?

The UK may be small with many problems but it still has some terrific places to visit. Be it a day trip, a long weekend or a two week vacation, you could be spoiled for choice. Love cities? Try London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff or Birmingham. Enjoy history? Visit the historic city of York, Bath, Chester, Lincoln or Nottingham. Prefer beach holidays? The county of Cornwall has beaches to die for. Others can be found at Scarborough, Brighton, Bournemouth or Torquay. In other words the UK offers much more than you might imagine. Even a rural setting is catered for with the Yorkshire Dales, Lake District, Scottish mountains and more.

There are however two important considerations when taking a vacation in the UK. The cost and the weather.

Accommodation, eating out, travel and the like could cost you more than a week's break in Greece, for example. The UK is reportedly suffering from a drought but tell that to the weather. It is as unpredictable as ever with Summer like weather in March and Winter type weather in May. In other words any weather is possible but at least you should not  experience earthquakes, tornadoes and other weather systems.

The cost could be a different matter although today March 7, 2012 the government launched its "vacation in the UK campaign". The campaign claims that Brits will be able to receive a discount price for many events, attractions and the like in the UK.

In June the UK will host the London Olympics. This will be preceded by the Queen's Jubilee and associated celebrations and events. According to the BBC "Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt said it was the "perfect time to make the most of the UK" as he launched "Holidays at Home are Great" at the London Eye." Wonder where he will be spending his vacation?

Hunt went on to say, "2012 is going to be a year like no other in our history with the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Olympics. "With so much going on, this is the perfect time to make the most of the UK and take your holiday, long weekend or short break here."

Plenty of UK celebrities are working on the campaign. Commercials will show people such as Stephen Fry, Rupert Grint, Julie Walters and Michelle Dockery extolling the virtues of a "staycation".  This is the term often used for a holiday or vacation spent in your home country.

The adverts will apparently offer good discounts to visit  restaurants, attractions, events, stay in accommodation and use public transport. Many however are for the period up to and including June 2012. Most families in the UK take their main vacation to time with the school summer holidays which begin at the end of July.

Perhaps the campaign has been created after the Royal Wedding last year. Many people in the UK took advantage of the extended weekend break and took a vacation abroad. Plenty of people have already planned to do this in early June 2012.

The representative of Visit England said, "This is the largest domestic tourism campaign ever undertaken and aims to inspire UK residents to take advantage of the fantastic events taking place in the country this year. "Now is the time to holiday at home - there is no comparison anywhere else in the world with what's on offer here in the UK this year."

That is debatable. One of the ads has Rupert Grint asking why anyone would go surfing in Bondi when they could go to Bridlington Beach, in Yorkshire. This one has to be a joke. Still there will be some great things to see and do in the UK this year but the cost will still be too much for many.

This blogger is also wondering just who is funding this £5m campaign which is being led by VisitEngland?
