The UK is looking ahead to Eurovision 2012. This peculiar singing contest continues to entertain, often for all the wrong reasons. In the past, the UK had a fairly mixed success in Eurovision. Somewhere along the line though, we just sort of lost the plot. It was probably way back in 1967, when Sandie Shaw became the first UK winner. Her song entry was Puppet on a String, and the UK thought it had the winning formula. Each successive year saw the UK's entry being a bouncy, upbeat number, in much the same vein as Puppet on a String. For a while this worked but nothing lasts forever, does it?
With entries such as Lulu singing Boom Bang A Bang, the UK ultimately became the pits, as far as Eurovision was concerned. If you add to this the current voting strategy the UK is log overdue Eurovision success. Unbelievable as it may sound some countires voting is politically motivated. Hence the Balkan countries such as Croatia, Serbia, Herzegovina and the like all vote for each other. Cyprus always votes for Greece, and Greece reciprocates. The UK tends to be out on a Eurovision limb.
The UK has tried tactics such as utilising the services of Lord Webber but to no avail. This year they have gone for the "big guns" but will it work?
Veteran crooner Englebert Humperdinck will represent the UK in Eurovision 2012. 75-year-old Englebert has often been called the "King of Romance". Englebert is delighted that he has been selected and said it was an honour. In Europe Eurovision is taken more seriously than in the UK. Here appearing in the show can be a kiss of death to a musical career. At least Englebert does not have that to worry about.
Eurovision has turned national success to world musical success for some contestants, most notably Abba and Irish performer Dana. Each year the Eurovision is held in the country of the previous year's winner. For 2012 it will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 26.
The UKs mission, now that it has its performer, is to chose the right song for him to perform. Englebert is an experienced performer but will he win? Hard to say. After all will Eurovision get the Hump or not?
