Dame Judi is a much loved and well respected actor in the UK and around the world. Her career spans many years and takes in Stage, the big screen and the small screen. She has had a long and varied career from appearing in a UK sitcom many years ago to, playing Queen Victoria opposite Billy Connolly in a movie and so much more. Now Ms Dench is struggling in her work as her eyesight makes reading scripts increasingly difficult.
There is some hope though in the UK for patients suffering AMD. A series of injections into the eye can arrest the progression of the condition. It is a fairly recent development but great progress is being made. Regular eyesight tests are important to detect AMD in its early stages and give yourself the best chance of treatment.
Dame Judi told the Daily Mirror, "I've got what my ma had, macular degeneration, which you get when you get old."I had wet in one eye and dry in the other and they had to do these injections and I think it's arrested it. I hope so." Yes, let's hope so too.
The treatment can halt the progression of the disease which if left untreated leads to blindness. AMD remains, in the UK and the West, one of the most significant causes of blindness as people age. It tends to affect people over the age of 50.Judi now receives help with scripts when necessary from fellow actors and friends who read the scripts for her. She insists that she has no plans to retire although she is now aged 77. Good for you.
We would certainly miss her magnificent performances and her humour. Ms Dench is due to return to the role of M opposite Daniel Craig in the next James Bond movie.
Once again best wishes for the future are sent to Dame Judi
