The ad campaign is by a supposedly Christian Group. Again IMHO the advert defies the meaning of the word Christian.
The posters were to be displayed on the side of London buses. The campaign is by the Core Issues Trust. They did however receive the backing of the Anglican Church in general. The text of the ad is said to be a spoof of "pro gay" ads which read, "Some people are gay. Get over it." The text of the ad and its meaning however are very different. If the campaign organisers cannot see that they must be very foolish.
Boris decided to pull the planned two week ad campaign calling it homophobic. The ads had been cleared by the UK advertising standards agency but tMr Johnson said, "London is one of the most tolerant cities in the world and intolerant of intolerance. "It is clearly offensive to suggest being gay is an illness someone recovers from and I am not prepared to have that suggestion driven around London on our buses."
The ad claimed therapy could change sexual orientation. Give me a break. Does that mean we could have therapy and all become Gay? I ask you. What an enlightened group of individuals they must be. Perhaps they have come here as time travellers from the long distant past, you know the Dark Ages.
A representative of Core Issues said, "I didn't realise censorship was in place. We went through the correct channels and we were encouraged by the bus company to go through their procedures. They okayed it and now it has been pulled. I would be interested to know on what basis they have done that." He added: "It is of deep concern that there can only be one point of view and that is the point of view of individuals who are determined to push through gay marriage and apparently believe that homosexuality cannot be altered in any possible way."That is not a universally held view. "This is a disturbing development and it is disappointing the UK finds itself in this position."
Well this blogger for one is far from disappointed. A straight woman, married for almost 40 years, I applaud this decision. Yes it is offensive to claim that being Gay can be changed with therapy, as if it is something to be abhored. It is pointless attempting to argue any such point with bigots though. This means that Boris made the right decision. In the past the UK has had gay hate and such an ad is totally inappropriate in the 21st Century. Add to this the fact that the ads would be slapped on buses travelling around the Capital City of the UK and it is easy to see why they were pulled.
As for threatening they will sue. All I can say is, Get Over It.
