A woman has been arrested after she was accused of strangling her daughter-in-law. The reason? It was because her 22-year-old daughter-in-law gave birth to a baby girl not a boy as the family had hoped for.
The killing took place in Kunduz province in the North East of Afghanistan. It is suspected that the murdered woman's husband also played a part in the murder. He has since fled the area.
The little daughter is now two months old and apparently healthy. She has two sisters. The fact that the woman only seemed able to produce girls will have tipped the scales against her. Girls are still viewed as a burden in Afghanistan, except for the fact that they are needed to birth boys and toil, it seems to this blogger.
The police chief told the BBC that "the mother gave birth to a third girl two months ago. The husband and mother-in-law strangled her for giving birth to a third daughter". The report goes on to say "the mother-in-law, known as Wali Hazrata, tied the feet of the 22-year old woman, who was known as Stori, while Stori's husband strangled her".
If proven guilty it is to be hoped that the perpetrators meet tough justice. However it is feared that they will not. Local religious leaders though have been quick to condemn the murder saying that it goes against Islam.
Yes it does and against common decency. The woman at the centre of the allegations should not be the only person to face justice. Her son may be a member of the local militia but he too must shoulder the burden of guilt if the allegations are proven.
