This year it was the 158th boat race. Oxford came out strong but that was deemed a false start following problems with a swimmer of all things in the water. The race began again and once more Oxford looked the strongest team. However a clash of oars resulted in the Oxford crew continuing with one broken oar.
The Oxford crew appealed to the umpire but he decided to allow the race to continue. It was decided that Oxford had "attacked" Cambridge too closely and paid the price.
Oxford bravely battled on but to no avail. With one oars man down it was an impossible task. If the Oxford crew had stopped rowing the race may have been called void. As the race ended Oxford appealed to the umpire again insisting it should have been called a false start a second time as the incident happened within 100 metres of the start.
Cambridge rowed hard and won deservedly. However the furore is likely to leave a nasty taste in the mouth. Even after the race there was drama as a member of the Oxford crew laid collapsed at the rear of the boat. Eventually medics reached the scene and he was taken away for emergency care and oxygen.
