Today there have been yet more news on UK jobl losses. These though are not all to be laid at the door of the UK. It seems other countries are set to lose more jobs again.
Mothercare has announced that it is to close more of its stores. In May 2011 Mothercare said that, "It was reducing the number of UK stores from 373 to 266. The deadline for this was to be March 2013. Today April 12, 2012, this plan has been revised. It now plans to reduce its store base to 200 by March 2015. This will not only impact on the sales assistants but of course on suppliers, delivery drivers and more.
Also in the UK BMI is to be taken over by British Airways. This may mean that some staff will still be employed but it is expected that 1,200 jobs will be lost.
The third job loss announcement today has come from Sony. The Japanese electronics company is struggling to survive. It has announced the loss of 10,000 jobs worldwide. In a week when Sony announced record losses this news was expected. Whether ti had been predicted to be so many jobs is another matter.
The Sony job losses will represent a cut of 6% to the work force. It may be that more will have to follow. It is expected that the 10,000 will include up to 1,490 workers in the UK. It could be much less but that figure would be the worse case scenario. Sony's woes follow modern technological advancements such as the IPad.
Any job losses are bad, no matter where. In the UK they are very bad news with high unemployment already a fact of life.
