What is ironic is that in many people's minds Cyber space was created by the US. Having unleashed this wonderful but complicated place on the world it now finds that it has unleashed a potential monster.
As more governments, citizens and businesses bceome heavily reliant on cyber space the potential for disaster grows. So much so that the US is now fighting against its own creation.
This growth industry has seen the current US administration commit huge sums of money to budgets aimed at protecting against cyber attacks. Part of the problem however seems to be just who will be benefiting from this money?
RT reports that "The money is flowing. A whole cottage industry has sprung up around cybersecurity. According to Information week, the U.S. government is expected to spend $10.5 billion a year on information security by 2015"
"And Reuters reports that the worldwide market is as high as $140 billion a year. Cybersecurity is also one of the few areas in the new White House budget that escaped spending cuts".
There is no doubt that sooner or later a cyber attack could cause huge problems. Right now though there are people making Big Bucks out of making sure we all run scared. Some of these are the people who have the potential and knowledge to launch such an attack. In the same way that munitions producers made huge fortunes during World War Two and other conflicts, there is money in fear.
Cybersecurity expert Dr. Sean Lawson said “It’s going to become more common for defense contractors to hype cyber threats because that’s one of the few strains of money that still exists. It is a classic case of trying to motivate a response by rallying the troops by appealing to fear, by appealing to uncertainty.”
