The latest news reports have carried details of shootings close to the Empire State building in New York. The area in and around this building is popular with tourists and usually heavily populated with visitors.
Early reports state that two people have been killed, one being the gunman.
Several people are reported shit but their injuries are not known. The gunman launched his attack around 9am local time, 1pm GMT. A heavy police presence is at the scene of the shootings. All that the police have said so far is that the shootings are not believed to be terror related. The injured have been moved to hospital.
The US has had a string of gun related incidents during the last few months but those in that country who support the" right to bear arms" do not want tighter gun controls.
