Looking across the Pond the GOP race does seem a rather strange affair. This blogger may have said that before, however as time moves on it just gets stranger. It could be that a Democratic race for nomination would seem just as odd but in 2012 that is not an issue. The election proper will no doubt be different. Each sides campaign trail will be scattered with what is needed to achieve residency in the White House.
Today's thoughts have been brought on by a report in the Washington Post. Titled "Mitt Romney aide’s ‘Etch A Sketch’ moment" it certainly caught this blogger's eye.Often during an election campaign politicians have to play ball with their beliefs. Wise ones know when to keep stum. However what of their aides. It seems that in the case one of Mitt Romney's did not. Did he speak for Romney? Well he could have been voicing Romney's way of doing things but he may not. Now however he has labelled Mr Romney's campaign as transient. Mr Romney it would seem according to this aide will say and do what it takes to win through the GOP nomination and then the 2012 election.
Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior advisor for GOP presidential- nominee-in-waiting Mitt Romney.was the aide responsible for is being hailed the Gaffe of the month. CNN asked Eric, “Is there a concern that Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?”
Eric's reply quickly went viral, “Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign” “Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again.”
As the report acknowledged electioneers often have to tweak campaigns but it was crass for Eric to come clean and admit to this. In doing so his wording has made it appear that Mitt has no true principles but simply will say what it takes to become the GOP nomination. When that job is secure he will go back to square one and style himself in a way to appeal to the 2012 election voters.
It may have been an aide speaking and not Romney but that will not matter now. As they say "the cat is out of the bag". Does Romney have a clear Manifesto for government? It would seem not. Is he what he purportes to be? It would seem not.
More importantly is Mr Romney to be trusted? You decide.
