United States President Barack Obama is on the look-out for a new head of the FBI. If rumour has it right he has found the man for the job and is about to appoint James Comey, 52, to the role. Nothing wrong with that you may think until you remind yourself that Obama is a Democrat and Comey was one of Republican George W Bush's aides.

Robert Mueller, is the current head of the FBI but he is stepping down in September. There is still plenty of time to appoint a replacement but finding the right one for such a role will not be easy. Will Comey be the right man for the job?

When working with Bush, Comey stood his ground and refused to obey all of George's demands. Notably he resisted requests to carry out warrantless wiretapping as wanted by Bush. This made him an ally of sorts to Democrats, maybe even a hero. At that time Mr Comey was the acting attorney general and he did everything in his power to resist the warrantless wiretapping program.

When it came to the use of excessive force during interrogation Comey was once again in tune with Democrats as he tried to limit its use.

However, when all is said and done he is a Republican. Tony Blair in the UK tried a bi-partisan approach and it eventually back-fired on him. Comey could be a different kettle of fish but that remains to be seen.  Will his appointment go ahead and if it does will it cause political waves?.

We will report back in due course.

It has been revealed that a call between the FBI and UK police at Scotland Yard in January 2012 was hacked into. Ironic news when you consider that the call was with regards to hacking. Whoops.

Internet "pirates" Anonymous are said to have been responsible.

The call held sensitive information which would have been especially useful to Anonymous. The BBC has reported that the call covered "the tracking of Anonymous and similar groups, dates of planned arrests and details of evidence held". Yes very useful indeed.

Rubbing salt into the wound Anonymous released a recording of the call and an e.mail which held all the call participants e.maul addresses. A twitter account, AnonymousIRC, said: "The FBI might be curious how we're able to continuously read their internal comms for some time now."

The FBI is now searching for those responsible and issued a statement saying, "The information was intended for law enforcement officers only and was illegally obtained. A criminal investigation is under way to identify and hold accountable those responsible."

No matter what your stance on Anonymous is, this is bad news for those of us who love the relative freedom of the Internet. Slowly but surely the World Wide Web will disintegrate. It will face regulation and controls that will damage its fabric. That would be a shame. It has been one of the most fascinating and useful tools available for a myriad of uses and a truly multicultural community,
