Like Father like Daughter?
French Prime Minister Nicholas Sarkozy is facing an election in 2012. Look at his body language during the last months and it was easy to see he was getting into election mode. The French like so many other EU countries have had a rough ride in recent months. In spite of Sarkozy's sychophantic air when around German leader Angela Merkel all is not well.
When countries struggle with finances often voters turn away from the usual suspects. So often if voters also have concerns re migrants they turn to extreme right wing politicians.
It is easy after all to lay all the financial woes of a country at the door of others, especially foreign residents.
Today it has been announced that Marine Le Pen has officially entered the French election race. Le Pen is the leader of France's far-right National Front party. She is the daughter of the Jean-Marie Le Pen, who was the founder of the French National Party. She took over in 2011.
On the surface she is much more electable than her father ever was. He was all blood and thunder. She on the other hand looks as if butter would not melt in her mouth. Ms Le Pen said "I think the structure of our electorate has changed. The perception that right-wing voters have of me is extremely different today from the perception voters of the right had of Jean-Marie Le Pen."
There is little hard evidence to support this claim though. Ms Le Pen claims to have secured the backing of 500 elected officials. This is the magic number which will allow her to stand against Mr Sarkozy. Whilst she currently appears to believe that she has a chance of coming in second to Sarkozy who can tell. Unless France wants to go to the extreme right it will important that all eligible French citizens vote.
