Australian film star Mel Gibson was a hugely popular actor not so long ago. A string of Hollywood successes such as Lethal Weapon, Braveheart and Mad Max meant he had a career which was upwardly mobile. How times change.

Mel has had his demons during the last few years and most are still visible. In the past he has been accused of making racist, homophobic and sexist remarks. His latest outburst has left him at loggerheads with screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. Joe claims that the pair's differences stem from an Antisemitic outburst by Gibson which he claims is on camera. He said, "that Mel Gibson sabotaged biblical Jewish war heroes film The Maccabees because of his virulent anti-Semitic views". Mel has since claimed that the script was rubbish and he simply  wanted out.

It has been reported that Mel's outburst was said to have taken place during a trip to Costa Rica. It was captured on Joe's teenage son's phone iphone. The incident and fall out has led to a huge disagreement with the actor.

Initially Gibson had claimed that the film would be about Jewish heroism. Perhaps Joe should have seen the writing on the wall when Mel said "he wanted to do a movie ... that would convert Jews to Christianity.'

The media has been quick to make excuses for Mel's continuing bad behaviour at times, whilst at other times it has been quick to condemn. It has been reported that Mel is a manic depressive who now lives out of touch with reality. If that is the case it is up to him to take appropriate action.

Currently the West is fighting hard to rid itself of homophobia, racism, sexism, antisemitism and more. Having a supposed huge celebrity behave in such a way is not constructive. It  should and no doubt will spell the end of Gibson's high profile image. If he cannot behave like a 21st Century citizen then let him disappear quietly and grind his axe. We do not want to be involved.
