Even before the 2012 Grand National got underway there was drama. A P McCoy ended up with a knocked arm and his horse was running loose along the course. Luckily a course-side journalist managed to get a hold on the horse. If not the horse would have probably missed the race and wore itself out in the process.As the rest of the field gathered at the start A P was quickly undergoing a medical check. So was the horse of course. This meant a delay. The odds of Synchronise were bound to be affected and one £50,000 bet looked likely to therefore loose out either way.
Both A P and the horse were deemed fit to ride and made their way to the start. The crowd were ready and waiting appreciatively. For this blogger silent prayer to an unknown god or what you will that all the horses survived this often cruel race. Up and down the UK people who never gamble during the year will have placed a bet. Many workplaces will have held a sweepstake. The race in some ways may not be quite the big occasion it used to be but it remains a highlight of the UK racing calendar.
The weather was drier than forecast but cold. Not ideal for hanging about. Finally a start but a false one. Another false start as one horse raced the tape.A hasty regroup and they were off. About time as the hrse got the jtters.
The fallers began fro the first jump with Viking Blond, followed by junior west end rocker, Synchronise was downed at Beechers Brook and already the race looked more like a blood bath. Riders and horses scattered the course. What a disgrace of a race. At this stage you have to wonder how many horses will be killed as a result of today's race.
Sea Bass the favourite was still racing but the rest of the field was a mess. As is so ifetn the case a rider less horse led tge field.Having not watched the Grand Ntaional for some years this blogger was shocked at the race. The falls continued at the chair and further jumps.
There was still 10 jumps to go and very few still racing. More falls at the second attempt at Beecher's Brook. Of the 40 horses so few completed the race. Finally thankfully the final fence was reached and a photo finish was the result. After giving their all the front running horses tasted what IMHO was an excessive taste of the whip. The final result was Neptune Collonges, Sunny Hill Boy, Sea Bass and fourth Cappa Bleu.
