A few days ago we had a glimpse of the barge and today it is being lowered onto the Thames. Royal Rowbarge, has been built especially for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at considerable cost to the Nation. It will be presented to the Queen as a gift from the Nation after the celebrations are complete.
It would seem that no expense has been spared which during such austere times may appear a slap in the face of UK citizens. Rowbarge has been gilded with 22 carat gold leaf. This was carried out by students at City and Guilds Arts School in London. A selection of coloured glazes were also applied using a rare 18th century technique The events designer has claimed that attempts have been made to acknowledge the past whilst remaining in keeping with a 21st Century event. For those who love Royal watching and pageantry it will be spendid entertainment.
The Royal Barge will lead a flotilla of around 100 vessels majestically along the Thames.
