Yesterday the media reported that a British diplomat was attacked whilst walking in London on Friday evening. The mugging victim was named as Bermuda's new governor George Fergusson who is a senior British diplomat.
Today it has been announced that sadly he has lost the sight in on eye following the attack.
A representative of the London Met described the incident saying,"The 56-year-old man was assaulted and robbed at around 7.30pm on Friday, April 20, while walking in Margravine Cemetery and Park, also known as Hammersmith Cemetery. He added: "A small quantity of cash was taken and, at this early stage, officers are satisfied that robbery was the only motive. "Officers from Hammersmith and Fulham Priority Crime Unit are investigating the incident."
It appears that Mr Fergusson has paid a high price for taking a short cut to reach a dinner party. Reports claim that as he took out his mobile phone to check directions the mugger struck. He is due to take up the role in Bermuda shortly having previously served as Governor of the Pitcairn Islands and high commissioner to New Zealand and Samoa.
At time of writing it is believed that he will still take up this latest appointment. Emergency surgery on his inured eye was not successful and his sight has been lost in one eye.
Police are appealing for witnesses. They have described the attacker as, a black male, thought to be aged between 25 and 35, and around 5ft 10in tall. He was wearing a dark hooded top and dark glasses.
