Every day there are news reports of acts of violence around the globe. Today is no different. There are reports of deaths in ongoing violence in Afghanistan and Nigeria. There are reports of murders in countries such as the USA. All are terrible news. This following murder though caught our attention and deserves to be published and taken notice of.
It relates to the murder of a young woman by her father.
The father of 20-year-old Manju Kanwar believed that she was bringing the family name into disrepute. Oghad Singh, her Dad, though went further. He claimed that she was dishonouring him and ruining any opportunities her sisters may have to attract husbands. He claimed that she was playing fast and loose with men in the village of Dungarji in north western India.
He became enraged. So enraged that he beheaded Manju using a ceremonial sword.
In something reminiscent of the most gory horror movie he then walked through the village, on his way to give him self up to police. As he walked he told those he saw what he had done. They though could see for themselves. He was still wearing the bloody shirt and carrying Manju's head in one hand and the bloody sword in the other. He then surrendered to police.
The local villagers were shocked. Her funeral procession was accompanied by wailing women. In line with traditional customs in this region of India no females were allowed to attend her funeral. This meant that Manju's mother and sisters were barred from attending.
According to local police Manju had endured an arranged marriage. She had left this husband and returned home. That in itself would be something to anger her straight laced father. Adding insult to injury, as far as her father thought, she began too see different men and finally eloped with one two weeks ago.
Although she was out of reach and sight she was not out of mind. Somehow her father forced her to return home on Sunday June 17, 2012. He then carried out this terrible crime.
Today June 19, 2012, it has been Manju's funeral. Her father remains unrepentant over what he has done. What will be his sentence? How can he live with himself? Can he not see that hid daughter did not deserve such treatment?
As remote parts of India begin to move into the 21st Century a clash of generations is unde rway. Young people look to western ideas and morals and many do not want an arranged marriage. This is causing friction between the old and the young.
In Manju's case it resulted in her horrific murder. Will it result in the murders of more young women?
