Darrell pleaded guilty at his trial and today was in court for sentencing. His mother also received a jail term for trying to pervert the course of justice. She had destroyed Darrell's clothes in order to protect him from the police. She received an 18 month jail term.
The incident was caught on camera, that is CCTV. Caught up in the night's events it was in many ways a case of being n the wrong place at the wrong time. An estranged relative of Mr Mannington told the court today that she was, "completely devastated to have found and lost her brother again in the same day". "I feel compassionate for the youngster who was only 16 when he committed this crime which has potentially ruined his life." din
Today's judgement will have reflected Darrell's young age, remorse and the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Mannington. However a man has lost his life needlessly which means that for some the 8 year sentence will not be severe enough.
The court cases following the Summer 2011 riots have been rather strange. Lenient sentences for more serious crimes and heavy handed ones for lesser offences. Whilst 8 years may seem appropriate, for many it will not go far enough.
