Michael Gove - The face says it all
When UK PM David Cameron tells the people of the UK that we are all in it together, must of us think bunkum. He is referring of course to the swingeing cuts affecting people across the country.
As a millionaire, with a wealthy wife, Cameron's standard of living bears no relation to that of most ordinary people. When Conservative Education Secretary Michael Gove suggests that we fund a new Royal Yacht, as part of the Queen's Jubliee celebrations, we know that man is in a world of his own, far removed form the day to day penny pinching many people experience.
For once David Cameron was wise enough to say a resounding no to his Minister, Mr Gove.
Mr Gove had suggested that the great British public should donate a £60m royal yacht to the Queen as part of the 2012 diamond jubilee celebrations. One million pound for each year of her service. What a gift, especially on top of all the other monies and gifts she has received over the years. Add to that the planned costs of the jubilee celebrations and the financial outlay must be astronomical.
Cameron's spokesperson said that Mr Cameron felt it would be inappropriate to spend such a sum of public money at this time, saying"Clearly there is a difficult economic situation, there are scarce resources, and therefore we don't think it would be an appropriate use of public money at the present time." No nor at any time ion the foreseeable future, I should cocoa.
Deputy PM Nick Clegg also derided the suggestion saying, "I suspect more people in the country would think, given there's very little money around, that this isn't top of their list of priorities for the use of scarce resources." Yes, got it in one Nick.
Gove's suggestion was part of a "confidential leaked email". Whoops. Not very confidential when it is plastered all over UK news and the Internet. It has been reported that in part it said, "In spite, and perhaps because of, the austere times, the celebration should go beyond those of previous jubilees and mark the greater achievement that the diamond anniversary represents." He went on to suggest a gift from the nation, that is the Royal Yacht. Well if that is the case he better ask those people who will be expected to contribute. That is usually the done thing. I think we all know what the answer would be.
People like Michael Gove are so out of touch with society they do not have a clue. They are however quick to authorise cuts which may mean a person's income being slashed. Perhaps they do this to foot the bill for extravagances such as royal yachts.
