At Easter 2012 TEK carried a report about Thusha Kamaleswaran, who to date is Britain's youngest victim of gangland crime. At the time TEK wrote:
"Six -year-old Thusha was caught in cross fire during a gangland gun crime in 2011, in Stockwell, South London. On April 19 the men found guilty of the shooting are due to be sentenced. Thusha suffered injuries which have left her in a wheelchair. The little girl was dancing in the aisles of a relatives shop, in front of her parents, when the attack happened. Footage of the incident as it happened was recorded on the store's CCTV. It was shocking to see such a tiny innocent victim of a gangland gun"
Our earlier report carried good news about Thusha enjoying her Easter holiday. Today the report carries good news about those who inflicted her injuries.
In court today for sentencing were Nathaniel Grant, Kazeem Kolawole and Anthony McCalla. The three men had already been convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent and the attempted murder of rival gang member Roshaun Bryan. According to the BBC "Grant was told he would serve at least 17 years and Kolawole and McCalla 14"
Whilst in some ways the sentences are severe they may not be severe enough. All the men are young and with good behaviour behind bars will be out too soon in most people's opinion.
Passing sentence the judge said that their actions had been "of the utmost gravity", before adding: "Not one of you has, in my judgement, shown a sliver of remorse." The three men were also described as "a risk to others"
Six-year-old Thusha was hit in the chest by a bullet. It passed through the seventh vertebra of her spine, leaving her paralysed. Only recently has Thusha been discharged from hospital.
