Over the Christmas period, in 2011, Nigeria was hit by bomb attacks. The attacks were aimed at Roman Catholic churches and their congregations. At Christmas time the churches were bound to be full to the rafters. The loss of life was high but the effect of ongoing conflict has meant that around 90,000 people in Nigeria are now displaced. Militant Islamist group Boko Haram admitted responsibility for the bombings. There have been other bombings by this group, even during Christmas 2010.

Last week Boko Haram and Nigeria's security forces were involved in heavy gun battles. People fled the violence leaving everything in their wake, Last night, Tuesday December 27, 2011, a bomb was thrown into a school. The cowardly attacks look set to continue.

Boko Haram frowns on any political or social activity that may be viewed as Western. The Islamist group or sect was founded by Mohammed Yusuf in 2002. He was killed by authorities in 2009 but the group reformed and have begun to escalate violence once again. They will not rest it seems until they are either wiped out or Nigeria is transformed into a strict Muslim nation, of centuries ago.

Business owned by Christians have been burned to the ground and a new Holy War is feared.
