Parliament in the UK held a long debate prior to last night's vote on the EU. All party whips had tried their best to make MPs tow the party line and vote against a referendum.

This hard stance on the EU will add to the Tory woes. Leading Conservatives such as David Cameron and William Hague are known Euro sceptics. It seems though that they do not want the people to have any say in UK membership

The motion to hold a referendum was defeated by 483 votes to 111. 81 Tories voted in favour of a referendum which resulted in the total of 111 votes.against. Two of the 81 had resigned their government posts to vote freely. This means the NO vote was primarily made up of Conservatives.

Ed Miliband was quick to attack David Cameron using the vote to highlight flaws in the unity of the current government.

The government it seems is not totally discounting a referendum at some non-specific time in the future, but just not now.
