Late in July police in Pakistan apprehended a couple who had tried to have sex outside of marriage. That in itself is appalling news. You would think that it was the dark ages, and it makes you realise that for some people it still is.

However the couple were then reportedly marched to the police station naked. The woman is said to have begged the police to be allowed to cover herself. The man was beaten by police, adding injury to his public humiliation.

Today the BBC have reported that police involved in this travesty of justice have been suspended.

The suspension of several police officers follows a public outcry. The incident was filmed on mobile phnes which may have forced the authorities to act. Public humiliation is not unknown in Pakistan. Forcing a naked couple to march to the police station may have been a step too far for Pakistan but other incidents would never be allowed in western countires.

If the heavy handed means used by authorities in Pakistan worked there would be no illicit affars, would there?

Other incidents have tended to be by the rule of the mob with villagers meting out "justice". The fact that the pair were paraded naked by officers of the "law" makes takes this incident to another level. However wthout mobile phone footage as proof would any action against the officers have followed?

Justice and the rule of law in Pakistan must bear no relation to that in the West. The man involved has been released on bail and the woman remains in jail. For what we wonder?

Local people were appalled by the naked parade at the hands of the police but it seems that being arrested for sex outside of marriage is justified in their minds.
