Acclaimed American author Ray Bradbury has died at the age of 91. He will be remembered for  Fahrenheit 451 and Something Wicked This Way Comes. He did however have a long and fruitful  career which dates back more than 60 years.

Born in Illinois on August 22, 1920, Ray did not have the benefit of further education. His education finished with High School. He was as some would say though a student of life.

On leaving school he sold newspapers as a street venodr for three years whilst he perfected his writing skills in what free time he had. By 1943 he was becoming an established author and the rest as they say is history.

These days Bradbury is often essential reading for students. His stories though are far from run of the mill. Fahrenheit 451 was written in 1953 but eerily predicts a time not unlike the 21st Century. One where populations listen to a constant stream of music by way of a type of small earphone and watch silly soap operas on TV.

in explaining his enthusiasm for literature Ray said in 2008, "If you know how to read, you have a complete education about life, then you know how to vote within a democracy."But if you don't know how to read, you don't know how to decide. That's the great thing about our country - we're a democracy of readers, and we should keep it that way." Well said.
