News of a couple of "celebrity" deaths today were sad, as always. The first related to British film director Tony Scott who died at his own hands. Scott, brother of Ridley Scott, left a suicide note before jumping from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California, August 19, 2012 Currently investigators are satisfied that it was suicide. The reasons are not yet clear.

He was a successful director, with films such as Top Gun and Beverley Hills Cop II under his belt. He was 68-years-old. His bridge dive was witnessed by a passer-by. Emergency services called to the scene have discovered Scott's body. RIP.

The second reported death was sixties singer Scott McKenzie. For those of us from the baby boomer generation Scott will always be associated with "flower power"

."If you are going to San Fransisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair".

Those who were even perhaps only a small part of the hippy generation will have fond memories of youth, fun and gentler times. Of course for some it was far from that. Looking back through rose-coloured glasses it is easy to forget any dark days.

Remembering Scott McKenzie, whose image is still etched on our mind's eye, days of sunshine spring to mind.

In recent times Scott was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. This illness attacks the body's nervous system and can be very debilitating. There are reports that he recently underwent a stay in hospital following a heart attack. However the report maintains that he wanted to die at home and discharged himself from the medical facility. He was aged 73.

Scott McKenzie had a long and successful career but remains in our thoughts for his 1967 classic. He died August 18, 2012.

It's the way I tell 'em

Veteran Irish comedian Frank Carson has died following a period of ill health. Last year it was revealed that Frank was fighting a battle against stomach cancer. Belfast-born Frank passed away surrounded by his family, at his home in Blackpool, Lancashire. In a statement, they said he was a "husband, father, Gaga and comedian" who had "set off for his final gig". They went on to add, "He went peacefully at his home in Blackpool surrounded by his greatest fans - his extended family. It's quieter down here now. God help them up there!!"

Frank would have appreciated their humour at this sad time.

He became a familiar face on British TV in the late 60s and70s following a stint on the ITV show The Comedians. He went on to appear on many TV shows as well touring the UK. Sadly a lot of the comedy greats from that era are all rapidly growing old. Another new generation of funny men and women will of course take over but whether they will reach the popularity of these from this bygone era remains to be seen.

Fellow Irish man Eamonn Holmes paid many tribute to Frank on early morning TV today February 23, 2012. He will be attending Frank's funeral on Saturday, March 3, 2012. Eamonn said,  "He was just a complete bundle of energy and at 85 he was still going and still cracking jokes." Unlike many comedians Frank was a comedian 24/7 it seemsAmong Frank's classic lines recalled are,

  •  My father fought in World War I, single-handedly destroyed the Germans' lines of communication. He ate their pigeon
  •  A fella walks into a pet shop and says: "Give me a wasp." The shopkeeper replies: "We don't sell wasps." He says: "There's one in the window."
  •  A man goes into Boots and says: "Have you got Viagra?" "Do you have a prescription?" asks the chemist. "No,” he replies, "But I've got a photograph of the wife..."
  •  A fella walked into hospital and the doctor said: "You've got three minutes to live." The man said: "Can you do something for me?" "Yes," he said. "I'll boil you an egg."
  •  I don't think my wife likes me very much. When I had a heart attack she wrote for an ambulance
  •  A fella said to the doctor: "What's the good news?" "You've got 24 hours to live." He says: "What’s the bad news?" And the doc says: "We should have told you yesterday."
  • I rang British Telecom. I said: "I want to report a nuisance caller." He said: "Not you again."
  •  My wife said to me: "If you won the lottery, would you still love me?" I said: "Of course I would. I'd miss you, but I'd still love you."

As one of the old school of stand up comedians his comedy was ignored at one time. Now audiences are remebering what classic performers such comedians were. Frank's other catchphrase, It's a Cracker. Well they all were when he told them.

Frank managed to retain a naughty boyish charm and rarely if ever offended. Today a host of celebrities, fellow performers and famous people have been paying tribute to Frank. Many have recalled personal funny stories. The World has lost on its great comedians. RIP and condolences to the family.

It may seem odd that the heir to a throne is aged 83 but such is the current state of the Royal Family of Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz al Saud had been suffering from colon cancer for some time. He is thought to have been in New York when he died, early October 22, 2011, having undergone surgery in July of this year. Recently he had been undergoing medical tests in the US.

It is always a sad time for relatives when a loved one dies, no matter how old he or she is. The announcement from the Royal family read, "With deep sorrow and sadness the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz mourns the death of his brother and his Crown Prince Sultan... who died at dawn this morning Saturday outside the kingdom following an illness."

In spite of his advancing years and ill health Crown Prince Sultan was minister of defence and aviation in Saudi Arabia. It is "closed shop" as far as politics and free thinking goes it appears. His role as heir apparent looks set to be filled by 78-year-old Prince Nayef.

However, with all of the leading lights of the family in their seventies or eighties it is not clear what will happen in the not too distant future of Saudi Arabia. RIP

One of the leading light's of the sixties folk music scene has died at the age of 67.Bert Jansch was a founder member of the band Pentangle. He was classed at the time as in the league of American musician Bob Dylan if not even his musical equal.

Jansch was born Herbert Jansch in Glasgow on November 3, 1943. During his long career he released 23 solo albums, the last of which, The Black Swan,  in 2006, featured collaborations with curent musical greats Beth Orton and Devendra Banhart.

Many renowned musicians are happy to acknowledge that they were influenced by Bert Jansch. This list includes Paul Simon, Jimmy Page and Donovan.

Hearing of his death tool me back to the mid sixties when Pentagle appeared at Hull City Hall. As a teenager back then I loved their performance. Times change and sadly we all age. Bert had continued to remain an influential musical force to succesive generations ignoring the passge of time.

He died following a period of ill health due to cancer.

42-year-old Sergeant Barry Weston became the first UK soldier to be repatriated to the UK via the re-vamped RAF Brize Norton.

For some time repatriated soldiers have made the journey home through the town of Wootton Bassett. Wootten Bassett became famous across the world for the respect the towns people showed to he fallen on their journey home.

In the last four years 345 UK service personnel were repatriated through the town of Wootton Bassett. Today 2,000 people lined the roads near Brize Norton to show their respect for Sgt Weston.

Repatriations will not travel through the nearby town of Carterton but that did not stop the locals travelling the short distance to be there for Sgt Weston and his family. Concerns have been raised though about how safe or practical this amount of people will be at the roadside for such processions. Barry's loved ones said they were overwhelmed by the support they had received.
