Giffords and Barber
A week ago Republican Scott Walker retained Governorship of Wisconsin in a recall race. Republicans latched on to the news as a good sign. One that meant the GOP were going to win through and ultimately win the 2012 US Election in November.

Today June 13, 2012, there is news of a Democratic victory which could dampen their enthusiasm. The seat up for grabs was Arizona. It was left vacant after injured senator Gabrielle Giffords decided to retire from politics. She was left lucky to be alive after being severely injured in a mass shooting in 2011. Her strength of character has kept her going and progressing along the road to recovery.

Whoever was victorious in Arizona knew that it could be a short term position. With the election in November the term of office may be brief. However it is an important strategic gain for the Democrats. It could be people's feelings regarding Ms Giffords or a Democratic leaning in the State. Whatever the reason it is good news for the Democrats and Barack Obama.

It helps redress the balance after Scott Walker's win and the associated reports in the media. Mr Barber will complete Ms Giffords term on office.

The Arizona seat was won by 66-year-old Ron Barber. Previously an aide to Ms Giffords, she has supported his election campaign in every way that she can. Barber was also injured in the same mass shooting as Ms Giffords. Although seriously injured Barber is now well enough to take on this role. 6 people were killed in the Tucson shooting, including a child.
