| The ice salt challenge is an ever increasingly popular craze amongst kids. Not heard of this one yet? You will. The craze has already taken some victims by surprise. It can result in painful injury and scarring. So what does it involve? Here is a simple explanation. If you were to wet a patch of skin, say on your arm, sprinkle with salt and then apply an ice cube plus pressure a chemical reaction would occur. It would result is a nasty scar on your body depending how much pressure you applied and for how long. So why would you do this? Bravado, peer pressure, for a dare, or who knows. It is hard getting into any person's mind but that of a teenager is nigh on impossible. Part of the challenge is to see how long you can stand the ice being held to your body. As the reaction occurs it is painful to say the least. One young man, a 12-year-old, laid his back bare. Friends then wet, added water and ice to a large cross shape on his back. He suffered second degree burns with associated problems. Youtube is full of videos promoting this stupid craze. Of course the more adults condemn the craze the more its popularity will increase in some quarters. However there must surely be better ways to express your individuality and teenage agnst. The challenge tests your pain threshhold but why? It is pointless, painful and damaging long term. Parents need to be aware of this silly craze. A challenge like this will spread amongst young people so easily with social networking. CBS reported "The challenge is so painful because of the chemical processes involved. Typically water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but adding salt causes the freezing point to drop as low as 0 degrees. When applying ice, energy is pulled from what's nearby - in this case, heat from a kid's skin. While "competitors" fight the urge to drop the ice, they risk further damage in the form of blisters or second-degree burns, or frostbite." The story of the latest victim, the 12-year-old boy, has ben published by his parents in the hope that others will heed the warning. The "challenge" proves nothing in reality but hw stupid a person can be. Pain, scars, needing surgery and more could all follow this challenge.
