Spam, You are a trillionaire

Until recently my Spam folder was always fairly empty. Then along came TEKJournalism UK. It seemed prudent to show an email address on the website and so this blogger opted for her secondary email address. Since then she has had enough Spam to feed the proverbial five thousand, that is if the Spam in question were tinned meat.

Daily a handful of emails drop into my spam box. They tell a tale of riches beyond compare. I must be one of the luckiest people alive, ever. Never received these spam emails? Well here are a few to show you what I mean:

• Bank of America - Your payment has been approved please open attachment for details.
  
• We are now at the first quarter  of the year 2012 and some recommendations has been made concerning your payment. Kindly read the attached details for clarity, reply ASAP. 
• Joseph Deiss - Attn: Attached is a detailed letter as pertain your contract/inheritance fund. Read and respond as prompt as possible. Regards.
• I have inherited £15 million but just need..............;

The typo was part of the email. Hardly instilling confidence I think. Until today most of the emails simply told of great wealth and asked that I contact the sender. They made their way to the trash can of my computer quick as a flash. Today they have all had attachments supposedly detailing my imminent great wealth. Experience tells me not to even attempt to peak at the contents of these attachments. To do so could cause untold problems for my computer.

However I do wonder if other people get caught out. Perhaps they do not utilise a Spam inbox fully? Perhaps they are gullible and reply. In the past most emails have requested that I send some amount of money. Therein often lies the con.

Initially what puzzled me was why they bothered? That led this blogger to believe that somewhere along the line at least one person is sucked in. If not spamming would not be worth the effort, surely?

For those readers who could be caught out remember this. If it seems to good to be true it is. Why would some person at the other side of the world select YOU of all people to help them get hold of their forbidden fortune? Be extra cautious as far as opening email attachments goes. Better still keep your email address private. Having put one email address on TEKJournalisUK and received a wealth of offers from people wanting to make me a trillionaire this blogger realises just how many scammers are out there.

The best advice is make sure that you install good spam and virus protection. Update it regularly. Likewise make sure that you scan your computer frequently. Ignore ridiculous offers, simply delete them instead. Research the best options for you. Better safe than sorry.
