First then, what is green tea?
Wikipedia describes green tea as being, "made solely with the leaves of Camellia sinensis that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing".
Medical researchers have carried out many tests on green tea with some proven benefits being confirmed. Many people begin to drink green tea hoping to lose weight. There is not a great deal of factual evidence to support this but what have you got to lose? A few pounds in weight if you are lucky?
Personal experience.
Oddly a colleague had given me a green tea tea-bag to try when a few days later my doctor told me that green tea could help reduce my blood pressure. With a family history of high blood pressure I was not happy being told that mine was a little high.
It was in fact 134 over 110 and it was that bottom figure which was worrying. Over the next few weeks I had my blood pressure checked a few times. It varied but would not lower to less than 134 over 95. Off I went for a two-week vacation in the sun knowing that a doctor's appointment a few days after I came home would be necessary. If my B.P., blood pressure, remained high it looked like medication was on the cards.
After being back home five days I attended my B.P. check-up appointment. During my vacation I had followed a healthy diet, but had drank a little alcohol more often than usual. I had walked daily, that too more than normal. I had also taken a pack of green tea bags on vacation with me and drank the tea regularly.
Voile`. My B.P. was 124 over 85. What a surprise. Not bad for a person aged 60 and in just two weeks.
Of course, as I told the nurse, perhaps it was the vacation which was responsible for my lower blood pressure but either way it was good news. Instead of medication a regular two-week vacation on prescription from your doctor would be a good idea.
A blood pressure check six weeks later showed some fluctuations but overall the readings were good. The results however show that stress at work, or in your life at home, is not good for your health.
Drinking green tea and keeping black tea and coffee consumption to a minimum is also beneficial to your health. An increase in exercise can also help reduce high blood pressure.
People who try green tea sometimes find it unpalatable and rather bitter. These days though there are so many brands available that you should be able to find one that suits your taste.
I bought a U.K. brand of decaf green tea, as recommended by my colleague, as it is not bitter. It makes a light green coloured drink which I enjoy as it is. I guess you could add a squeeze of lemon or a little sugar if desired.
Can green tea help you lose weight?
I also found that, although I ate very well on holiday I had only gained a couple of pounds. That is unusual for me. Perhaps the green tea will help shift a few pounds too.
A word of warning: My doctor told me that if you drink too much green tea you may get diarrhoea. You have been warned!.
