G20 security Mexico
Sunday June 17, 2012, and if you live in one of the G20 countries your beloved leader will be busily packing or already be in Mexico. They are off on another jaunt, or jolly, this time to South America. Carbon footprints its seems do not apply to these twenty leaders and their vast entourages.
Still who would want the cares of the world on their shoulders right now? They face a Herculean task. However they all volunteered for their respective roles and have reaped many rewards. None of them usually step down but rather all try their damnedest to get re-elected. That must speak for itself.
The summit in Mexico will be held in the first Latin American venue, taking place in place in Los Cabos. The agenda? This time it is going to be "economic stability and structural reform for growth and employment; strengthening of financial systems and procurement of financial inclusion for economic growth; improving international financial architecture in an interconnected global economy; mitigating negative effects on price level and volatility of commodities, in particular those affecting food security; and promoting sustainable development with a focus on infrastructure, energy efficiency, green growth and financing the fight against climate change."
High faluting words indeed. In plain English then it will be finances, economies, food and the environment. This last one has to be a joke. Having flown half way across the World so often these 20 leaders appear to not care one iota about the environment. Of course once more it is the adage "do as I say not as I do".
For all of these summits the situation in the world continues to worsen. Economies are struggling, people are expected to embrace a dwindling income, conflicts abound and the rich continue to get richer. That elusive 1% protected by so many right wing governments, and some supposed left wing ones, is assured prosperity at the hands of the ordinary man, woman and children.
The G20 countries are, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa , The European Union, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.
Some strange political bedfellows there. Argentina is currently at odds with the UK over sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Many G20 leaders are at odds with Russia and China over Syria and more. Then there is the matter of those countries not included. The 20 may believe that right now they have the most important lands in the world but that could soon change. It also means that what agreements the G20 come to will not be as far reaching as necessary.
Here at TEK we support "green issues" but we despair of the G20 leaders. They will try to implement costly "green" schemes which will hit people hard, knowing full well that they will not work. Look at the big wide world and what is happening out there and it is easy to see that there are other green issues which need addressing first.
In other words they are paying lip service to green issues and hoping to profit from doing so.
You have to also wonder about the productivity of the G20 summits. They are held so frequently these days, cost a small fortune, in cash and to the environment, yet the world's problems worsen. Time for a re-think? It would seem that way.
