In November 2011 TEKJournalismUK reported that unemployment in Great Britain had climbed to a worryingly high level. At that time we reported that the UK youth unemployment figures were at their highest since 1996. Unemployment is always bad news but perhaps has more devastating consequences when it hits the youth of the country. It can alienate a generation who may become almost unemployable after a long period of not working. That said unemployment is terrible news for the young, the old and those somewhere in between.
Today January 18, 2012, there is more bad news on the UK unemployment front.
17 years ago when unemployment was at this level there was a Conservative government in office. The Tories had made much of high unemployment records under Labour and utilised this in advertising, stressing that "Labour is not working" Finally people saw through their hollow promises and it was time for change. In swept the Labour Party and Tony Blair, initially a breath of fresh air following years of Tory governments.
The global economic downturn resulted in unemployment beginning to steadily increase again and the Tories used the old, "Labour is not working" once more this time against Labour PM Gordon Brown. On the blog holding the image in this report a comment from 2009 reads:-

"The Conservatives need to point out that unemployment is now increasing at its fastest rate EVER.
Highest monthly increases:
1980 97,000
1991 118,000
2009 138,800
These posters need displaying in working class areas and to highlight Labour's betrayal of their traditional supporters"
Really? Well surprise surprise the Tory led UK coalition government has been back in office since May 2010 and unemployment has gone through the roof. In 2009 the total number of people unemployed in the UK was 1.92 million. One wonders what the author of that comment feels about the UK unemployment figure released today which is 2.685 million! A disgrace? That is what he or she should feel.
This government cannot solely blame the economic downturn for its employment woes. Only yesterday they announced that 4,500 armed forces jobs in the UK would be cut. The government's economic policies have done nothing to stop the long line of companies in the UK facing bankrutcy and ultimately closing their trading doors once and for all. The NHS and other public sector agencies are facing a deeply cutting axe which will put thousands more out of work. At the same time the Coalition government is forcing many older people to work for longer before they can retire. A recipe for disaster it seems.
It is perhaps surprising that the Coalition are cutting police numbers, as well as the UK armed forces. If things continue to deteriorate they will probably need a heavy police and military presence to maintain order.
In the three months between September and November UK unemployment rose by 118,000. Yes in three months compared to the year of 1991 above. The December 2011 figure was 2.6 million, which has already risen to 2.685 million. Yes in one month. This takes the UK jobless rate from 8.3% to 8.4%. Female and young workers are said to be the worst hit.
SkyNews has reported that UK unemployment was heatedly debated in the usual Wednesday Prime Minister's question time in Parliament today. So it should be.:
Labour:"The defining characteristic of this Government is it does nothing as thousands of people find themselves unemployed," Mr Miliband said.
Conservative: Any job losses are a tragedy for those involved, the Prime Minister replied, adding: "We need more private sector employment, we need to move further and faster on that agenda."
Conservative: Employment Minister Chris Grayling echoed the thought saying that although the level of unemployment was "clearly much too high" the figures were more complicated than the headline numbers suggest.
TEKJournalismUK: Bunkhum. The Tories would not let Labour and Gordon Brown off in any way when the global recession hit hard and increased unemployment. Yet at that time the government tried its best to increase employment. This government has policies designed to resign more and more people onto the scrap heap of unemployment. It is that busy pleasing the banks and its influential backers that it cares not one jot about the man or woman on the street who become unemployed.
Labour was not working? Don't make me laugh. The Coalition is not working? You bet it is not, especially as far as the unemployed of the UK goes.
