In 2010 a state of emergency was declared over the state of Honduras prisons. On of the problems was the severity of overcrowding.
The current fire is thought to have started from an electrical fault. There however questions as to whether it was the result of a riot .As yet all of this remains speculation. That is it will until an ivestigation has been carried out. Perhaps this time any lessons, if needed, will be learned.
This latest fire broke out on the night of February 14, 2012, at a prison in Comayagua Comayagu is a town 90 miles (140 kilometers) north of the Central American country's capital, Tegucigalpa. There have been reports of prsioners trapped in cells screaming out. Some managed to escape the fire through the roof. For at least 100 death came as they remained trapped in their cells. Here they were either burned to death or suffocated by the fire's smoke and fumes.
The prison has admitted that some prisoners escaped during the chaos.
