Showing just how out of touch with the vast majority of the UK PM David Cameron is, it has been revealed that he is considering tax breaks for women who employ cleaners. Apparently this is a Swedish inspired tax break. The PM has not given the break a rubber stamp but is said to be considering it. He seems to think that it is a good idea.Well in this British woman's opinion it is wrong on so many levels.
If times are so tough, and we need to all take our strong financial medicine, tax breaks for women who want people to do their dirty work for them is wrong. If they earn enough to pay a cleaner then pay one. That is your choice. If not get of your bottoms and do it yourself.
It is noted that this is also a very sexist idea. The fact that home cleaning is the prerogative of the little woman.
Cameron of course has chosen to see the idea as a way to encourage more women to further their careers. Rightly so he wants to see more women in the boardroom. Those women who want to achieve dizzying heights in their careers will no doubt be glad to hear this. This government now claims that they will actively encourage such posts Perhaps he thinks it will also encourage growth in the cleaning industry as more women are employed clearing up after other people. Ironic indeed.
Stereotypes still prevail in the UK and the vast majority of people employed to clean homes are women.
Here perhaps we should mention that this same PM and government want to restrict child benefit, reduce tax credits for working families on poor incomes, cap welfare payments for those who are unemployed and so much more. Still maybe all the women in these circumstances can get jobs as cleaners for the wealthy, says she with heavy sarcasm.
Finally we must acknowledge that the millionaire front bench of the Coalition government would directly benefit from this tax break. What nonsense. Will single men who employ cleaners also get a tax break? It all smacks of Cameron intentionally or not looking after his own backyard. It will please his wealthy backers and Tory voters.
One voice of reason was Labour's Jessica Morden who said "Suggesting tax breaks for people who can afford domestic workers at the same time as cutting tax credits demonstrates how out of touch David Cameron is about the pressures facing women in this country"
