Having access to rolling news 24/7 is a mixed blessing. It means that it is easy to keep up to date with current affairs, as long as you bear in mind that news is subjective. However, one of double edged pros and cons of such viewing is watching news as it happens. Such was the tragic events of September 11, 2011.
It is both amazing and disquieting to realise that today is the tenth anniversary of the terrible acts of terrorism meted out on the US.
9/11 has become a symbol of so much to so many different people. Looking back I am left wondering how much has changed since that fateful day and if any changes made have been for the better.
9/11 changed the way many people view others and even life itself. Freedoms that we took for granted had to change. Gone were the days of quick and easy transitions through airport terminals. Protecting our security was quite rightly now key.
The global war on terrorism has seen military action in Afghanistan and Iraq. Saddam Hussein has gone and Libya’s Gaddafi looks set to follow. The 2011 Arab Spring has seen many changes in the Middle East but as yet most of the countries affected remain in a precarious state. Some are on the brink of democracy, others far from it. Insurgents wandering in and out of Pakistan has meant that country being attacked by drones and suicide bombers
This year finally the World’s Most Wanted man, Osama Bin Laden, was tracked down and killed. Holed up in Pakistan it seemed almost too easy in the end. It was not an easy mission though for the Navy Seals who risked their lives to complete it. Many aspects of Bin Laden’s death leave plenty of questions unanswered and numerous people sceptical.
Economic uncertainty and crisis have left the world in a delicate state. It seems as if conditions are all too ripe for further conflict and gloom and doom.
If 9/11 taught us anything it should have taught us how precious life is and yet how transient it can be. The victims of 9/11, who went to work, visited New York, or what you will on 9/11 were taken so quickly. It was a stark reminder that we should never take life for granted but rather grab what we can whilst we can.
The world may have a terrible set of problems ten years on but people still have the ordinary day to day fears and concerns. A War would be a terrible outcome right now and simply add to the woes of many. Yet in times of financial gloom wars have a habit of happening. We must not let that happen to the 21st Century.
We should look back at the footage of 9/11 remembering the victims trapped in the Twin Towers, some of whom had little recourse but to jump to their deaths. Look back also remembering the troops who have died in Afghanistan and in Iraq in the name of stopping terrorism. Remember too the people who have died in those countries and ask, surely it is enough?.
The terrorists who died believing that their after life would be Paradise made a choice. It is hard to believe that any God would offer Paradise to someone who had carried out such destruction though. You have to wonder about a person who believes that this life is so worthless it can easily be thrown away for the promise of the unknown. People with such careless disregard for life on earth will be hard to beat.
Since 9/11 many people have died in its name. On September 11, 2011 though, think about those who died and hope that the killing will stop soon. RIP.
