51-year-old Michael Pederson of Chertsey, Surrey was a former British Cavalryman. In 1982 he was one of the men who survived an atrocious IRA nail bomb attack in Hyde Park. The cavalry at the time were changing the guard. Today he is dead, believed to have been stabbed several times by himself. Before this however he stabbed his children Freya aged six and Ben aged seven to death.
There are many reports online regarding Mr Pederson's bravery at the the time of the 1982 bomb attack. His horse suffered many injuries that day but regained health and became something of a symbol of defiance against the iRA.
Initial reports, of the unfolding tragedy, involving the death of his children, simply said that three bodies had been found in a Hampshire green area. Details have been emerging since. The police authority involved have referred themselves to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. They have done this as contact with Mr Pederson had been made previously. In due course all will no doubt be revealed..
Mr Pederson had spilt from his wife Erica in late August. He had made it plain that he still loved her and was devastated by the split. Once seen as a national hero he was said to be a broken man.
Pederson also had two children from a previous relationship. On Sunday he had custody of his two young children as part of an agreement with their mother Erica. At some point during the day he killed the children and then himself. All too often we read or hear about men who kill their children following a relationship split. Is it for revenge? If they still claim to love thir ex partner why cause so much hurt? Some will claim that Pederson had suffered PTSD following his military service but to suddenly act in such a murderous way thirty years on, without previous warnings or signs, is odd.
Whatever happened may never truly be known. The extended family of Pederson and his children are now left in torment. RIP and condolences to the family. What a terrible tragedy.
