A meteor that spectacularly exploded and fell to Earth in Russia Friday set of jitters worldwide. Another celestial event was scheduled for later today. The Russian meteor hit was an unexpected event. One that would not be a surprise if it happened more frequently. The fact that we spin in the middle of who really knows where with a veritable shooting gallery of objects firing here, there and everywhere means we are lucky that such events are fairly rare.
Earth though was expecting an asteroid to fly past at what was being called a 'near miss'.
It is 21.20GMT Friday and in in Yorkshire the night sky is full of clouds. Asteroid 2012 DA14, could still be spotted but it is not likely here. Scientisrts had said that it would only be viewed using binoculars or a telescope. We have access to both but no clear sky available. Here it could be visible until a little after midnight, so we will try later on.
The asteroids a closest approach to Earth was at around 19:25 GMT.
The goood news though is that Asteroid 2012 DA14 has followed its predicted course and will soon be on its merry way. Comet ISON will be visible in our skies for a great deal of this year so for stargazers 2013 could be a bumper year.
Will these events impact on our weather and lives? You never can tell. As long as they do not directly impact with Earth we will survive. Sooner or later though Earth must surely get caught out.
