Time sure does fly. This is the last TWTWTW of January 2012. This coming week it will be on to February and in the GOP race on to Nevada. Will the Florida Primary scheduled for Tuesday January 31 have any surprises? Could it be that another GOP hopeful will decide to bow out? For now it seems to be touch and go between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.

Apart from fighting amongst each other though they must surely now be considering the long haul and preparing to do battle with President Obama and the Democrats for who leads the US for the next four years. Some Republicans are back to the question of whether or not Barack Obama is truly an American. Looking from across the Pond this is very baffling. After all the only true Americans are the native Indians. Everyone else will have a mixed bag of family history. They may be trying to prove a constitutional point but in the end they simply appear racist. They may try and berate Obama for allegations that he uses the race card but they seem to be expert at this.

Generalisations are silly on either side. In the end the American people will hopefully follow their hearts and their conscience. If like this blogger they feel President Obama has made the best of a bad job during his Presidency they will re-elect him. If they don't they will elect whoever is triumphant in the GOP race. If that were to be Mitt Romney it would not please Christian America. But you can't please all the people et all.

The UK has been saddened at the loss of life in Afghanistan. This week the death toll for UK soldiers in Afghanistan has risen again. It now stands at 397.

For the UK this is sadly becoming a regular occurence. The US has also suffered more loss of life and France has now decided to pull out early following its recent deaths in Afghanistan. Hamid Karzai has been meeting with David Cameron this weekend. He has offerend the Afghan people's thanks. However people in the UK are questioning how much longer we should remain in Afghanistan. As other countries draw down but we maintain that we will not simply abandon the country we could easily be left high and dry. Look at the loss of life in the image here and tell me that the UKs loss of life seems to be a fair representation given the small size of the UK. We should never forget that the people of the UK did not want this war. They were simply pulled in following 9/11. RIP
Whilst with in one breath each country pats their military service personnel on the back, they are preapring to cut manpower to the bone.

Sanctions imposed on Iran could be hitting their mark as UN negotiations look set to restart. Israel is still pushing for more but one has to surely question their nuclear capabilities.

As Arab monitors prepare to pull out of Syria it now seems that the UN is hastily re-writing its Syrian resolution. Further action looks inevitable.

A year on from the Arab Spring and many countries in that region look far from settled. Further south Sudan and Nigeria are imploding as this post goes out.

Yemeni's President Saleh flew into the US yesterday, January 28, 2012, for medical treatment. He stepped down after an assassination attempt but the US will not want him to settle there. No doubt he has accusations to answer back in the Yemen.

Picture
A solar storm headed for earth as the week began and it made for some spectacular skies. Over the UK the Northern Lights were viewed as far south as Doncaster in South Yorkshire. There were fears that this spectacular display in the heavens could affect some flights but as yet all has been well.

Mid week it was Burns night in Scotland and Scottish leader Alex Salmond took the opportunity to make January 25, 2012, the day he announced possible Scottish independence from the UK. A referendum will be held but already there are arguments from Westminster with regards to this.

The Occupy Movement has been in the news again, albeit briefly. A blanket on publicity still seems to be the order of the day. As Occupy protesters around the World have been moved on from their original sites of occupation they have been attempting to take over other venues.

In some cases there is no reason why they should not Occupy a particular place, if it is unused and the like but the authorities are determined they will find no resting place. In doing so they no doubt hope that the movement will fizzle out whereas in reality it could make the protesters more determined and their followers grow in number.January 28, 2012, Occupy Oakland became violent. As protesters allegedly threw stones and more at the police they in turn responded with tear gas and more. Reminiscent of the Arab Spring?

Has the World gone mad? It sure looks that way but there is still good news out there, you just have to look harder to find it.

The WEF, World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland experienced more protests. As those meeting are constantly playing with what our lives will be in the now and in the future perhaps that is hardly surprising.

Till next week stay safe, have some fun and TTFN

For the US this week there were more televised GOP debates. They left their mark in more ways than one. Firstly they either enthralled and entertained the people of the US or seriously bored and aggravated them. Guess it will depend on your political persuasion as to what you think. It may also depend on your religious beliefs and sexual orientation. Whilst not all the GOP candidates are anti-gay, bible thumping Christians one at least is and the other three will say what it takes to get them elected. Whether or not you agree with Rick Santorum you may have to grudgingly admire him for sticking with what he believes.

The GOP primaries are just the start of what will be a long political year for America. Obama knockers will be hoping that he is defeated in the November 2012 election. It would be a rarity for the incumbent President to fail but it could happen. Listen to some of the news Stateside and you may wonder if the Democrats have ceased to exist. The GOP race is dominating the news almost as much as if it were the actual race for the White House. You have to wonder if the so called "free press" are busily sowing the seeds of change for their own benefit. It will as usual all fall back on money and that 1% we all have heard so much about of late.

For the Republican Party it has been a week of change. The result of the Iowa Caucuses was finally overturned on Friday and a tie declared. It seems that some ballot papers have been lost and although Rick Santorum was most likely the winner it was felt that an outright win was not able to be declare.. Shenanigans? Possibly. TV debates throughout the week hit home and after Mitt Romney won New Hampshire Rick Perry decided it was time to go. He joins the others who have had to bow out of the 2012 GOP race.  Mitt Romney began to look unstoppable until Newt Gingrich finally decided it was time to go for bust. He changed tack slightly and went after Romney. He showed that fire in the belly and a proficiency in the art of debating could win over Republicans. Compared to Newt Mitt looks all style and shine with little substance. On Saturday January 21, 2012, Newt Gingrich coasted to a South Carolina victory. By next week Florida will have decided who will be their choice. Could it be outsiders Santorum or Paul? Leave your choice here.

The tragic Costa Concordia continued to be in the World news. Finally be the close of the week the remaining 12 bodies were recovered. Now the tricky job of removing the fuel in order to prevent an environmental disaster will begin. The vessels captain was arrested charged with adandoning passengers and more. The case against him continues.

In the Middle East
Syria experienced more deaths. Those in Syria who oppose President Assad have asked the Arab League monitors in Syria to refer Assad to the UN. The West may have little stomach for another Libya but it is still a real possibility. Assad's friends around the world are dwindling. As Syria looks to be on the brink of civil war the US is considering closing its embassy in the country. David Cameron accused Iran of supplying the Syrian regime with weapons used to attack civilians. Like the West including the UK and the US have never behaved in such a way? What bunkum. A Russian minister claimed the West's war of words is antagonising the situation. Mr Lavrov said, "As for the chances of this catastrophe happening, you would have to ask those constantly mentioning it as an option that remains on the table. I have no doubt in the fact that it will only add fuel to the fire of the still-simmering Sunni-Shia conflict. And I do not know where the subsequent chain reaction will end." He went on to say, "The mounting escalation and persistent tensions might end up in an adventure with unpredictable consequences or in an unwanted military confrontation," Western leaders believe, rightly or wrongly, that all of this is part of Iranian propaganda and that they have no intention of compromising.

Egyptian elections finally returned a new government to power. There was little press coverage when you consider the amount given to the Arab Spring of 2011. The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) , polled the largest share of the vote. Hardline party Al-Nour Party won 29 percent of listed seats, whilst the liberal New Wafd and Egyptian Bloc coalition came third and fourth respectively.

Religion is at the heart of bomb attacks in Nigeria. At the start of the week Nigeria experienced fuel strikes and their week closed with co-ordinated bomb attacks which killed more than 150 people. The death toll continues to rise. Militant Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibilty.

The EU financial crisis lurches on. In Greece families have begin abandoning their children. With no means of feeding and caring for them this seems to them their best option. They do not have the benefit of a UK type NHS or welfare state. Yet the EU demands more. Credit agencies such as Standard and Poor continue to downgrade banks and countries not caring one iota about the human cost.

Whilst the UK Coalition continues on its course of swingeing cuts the country prepares to waste a small fortune on the Olympics and its accessories, and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. No matter how much the powers that be maintain that neither will be as OTT as in the past we all know the truth. Vast amounts of money are diverted to the south of England for these events. No change there then. No wonder Scotland have begun walking a path toward independence.

Opposition leader Ed Miliband has not had a good week. The leader of the Labour Party has been attacked from all sides. Is it the media attempting to damage him or how British people truly feel. Whilst a UK election is still some way off Labour need to get their act in order if they want to pose a real opposition to the Coalition at the next election. A huge amount of British people are depending on them and those voters who chop and change need to be won over.

Midweek the Internet closed its doors, almost, in protest against the US Stop Online Piracy Act, SOPA. In the end a white flag was waved and the act has been put on hold. Hopefully permanently but don't hold your breath. Those in power have said they will now look at reaching a compromise if possible.

The World once again this week faced many challenges to its health and well being. The postponement of the XL Keystone Pipeline will for many environmentalists be at least a step in the right direction.

Till next week, from a beautifully sunny but chillingly cold and windy Yorkshire, stay safe, have fun and enjoy life,

It has been a week dominated by the US GOP race for nomination but the world has had much more happening, but let's start with the US.

In the US Mitt Romney took New Hampshire in a comfortable win. His fellow candidates launched attacks on his political credibility using any information possible. This led to him being attacked for speaking French!. On a more serious note he was attacked for saying that he liked to fire people. Whilst his statement was taken out of context those few words show too much about the real Mr Romney. All of this is strange when you view it from across the pond. So much in-house fighting which can only impact negatively on the Republican Party.

Toward the end of the week damaging video footage of US Marines apparently urinating on dead Taliban in Afghanistan shocked people around the world. Whilst such acts will have been carried out in the past it goes against the rules of war, notably the Geneva convention. It makes you feel sick to the stomach, especially when you could imagine our reaction if it was the other way round and the Taliban were urinating on dead US marines. The incident is under investigation and the allegations appear to be true. Why the footage would be posted now is baffling. Is it aimed at scuppering ongoing talks between the Taliban and US officials? Could be. Either way it is a good thing that it has come to light and those responsible should feel the force of the law.

In the UK Ed Miliband has been under attack for being a lightweight. Both he and Ed Balls have been trying to play an honest game which is refreshing in politics but can be political suicide. This weekend Ed Balls has said that if Labour are returned to office at the next election they would still implement a pay freeze on public sector workers. This has been jumped on by many. However he was trying to say that Labour will not make promises that they cannot fulfill. They will concentrate on securing jobs rather than offer huge pay rises at the expense of losing jobs. Sounds sensible to me.

Sunday January 15, 2012, Ed Miliband has been on Andrew Marr's breakfast show explaining what Labour's stance is. Mr Miliband struggled to finish his points. Ed wanted to get across that the latest EU credit rating downgrades had shown that current fiscal changes were self defeating. He said that this is why the Coalitions tactics will fail. In other words Labour will not be able to please all of the people but they will be able to make cuts that are fairer. Different choices to those of the Coalition. At least they are not playing the Tory card of promising anything to get into office and then running amok. Come to think of it that was the Liberal Democrat stance in the last election.Just think back to Nick Clegg's promises on tuition fees.

Scotland has launched a bid to escape the UK and become a country in its own right. This could be positive for both the rest of the UK and Scotland. It could also prove negative. Right now English politicians are trying to railroad the Scots into holding a referendum under British terms. It is still at the point of watch this space.

The Eurozone financial woes continued. They may not always be in the news but that does not mean that they have gone away. Greece is struggling to reach agreement with the banks. If it cannot the next tranch of bail out funds will be withheld and  the EU could be finally waving goodbye to Greece. Friday's credit agency downgrades of nine EU countries, including France was a stark reminder that all is far from well in the EU. France was up in arms claiming that the UK and Germany should have also been downgraded. Yep the EU is a unified community, I think not. It will of course be bad news for Nicolas Sarkozy who is facing an election this year. As a damage limitations exercise Standard & Poor's downgrades have been berated and belittled.

Across the globe Syria's civil war continues. It may not be generally called civil war but if the reports coming out of Syria are correct it is war. In Iran a scientist working on the country's nuclear program was killed in a rogue bomb attack. The culprits are unknown but Iran claims it was either instigated by the US or Israel. Iran War games and the West's reaction have left many people feeling that War is becoming inevitable. Add to this western sanctions against Iran and it has the potential for disaster.

Iraq continues to experience bomb attacks which have caused loss of life. The attacks also damage the fragile peace of the country. It seems as if the final US troops left Iraq by one door and following in their wake the insurgents began a trail of destruction. Will this be the fate of Afghanistan too? Hopefully not. This is why the current  talks between the Taliban and the US are so important.

Moving away from the  news of conflicts a cruise liner has crashed onto the rocks of an Italian island with a devastating effect. Comparisons between its fate and that of the infamous Titanic were drawn It is the 100 year anniversary of the Titanic disaster in April 2012. However this disaster appears to have had a better outcome. With 4,000 people on board the cruise liner it could have been so much worse. It still must have been terrifying. In true 2012 style as the disaster unfolded some passengers took time to record events on mobile phones and the like. There are still people missing but there are also still people being found alive on the wreckage. Three people are confirmed as dead. The ship's captain has been arrested amidst reports that he left the ship before the passengers had been safely rescued.

Till next week, stay safe and warm, TTFN
