Scotland is set to become the first place in the UK to give air pollution alerts.

The alerts will warn people via internet, text message or email if an area near them has poor air. The BBC may  soon broadcast the alerts in Scotland during weather reports.

Air quality in Scotland is the best in the UK but now and again levels are so high that it poses a risk to everyone.

This service has been launched after the EU told all member states that they need to make information on air pollution more ready available.

The Scottish Government is funding the scheme called 'the Know and Respond alert system'.

Most at risk from polluted air are people with with breathing problems but recent evidence has indicated that it can bring on heart attacks in those with cardiovascular disease.

Tests show that wearing a mask doesn't help because the particles are so fine. Same with a car, the tests showed levels inside your car are often as high as those outside.

Yes a sad sign of the times. We have gone full circle. In the past the UK had terrible air pollution, hence the grimy buildings. We cleaned our act up, and our buildings, and now we have this. Well done Scotland for at least trying to warn people
