Vietnam is coping with a mystery disease that strikes primarily children and young people. Since the disease first surfaced last year there have been 19 deaths and currently 171 are in hospital. Ten of those are in critical condition.

The disease seems to be confined to a province in the central part of the country. Quang Ngai is reputed to be a poor province by Vietnam standards but other than that, the source remains a mystery.

Victims of the emerging disease exhibit a high fever with a rash on hands and feet, loss of appetite and eventually multiple organ failure.

Health authorities in Vietnam have requested that the World Health Organization help them in tracking down the source of this new disease.
