The Amish people are the most peaceful and peace loving people on earth. Yet, even they are attacked at times. Attacks come from outsiders who know that the Amish will not retaliate and now there is splinter group from their own religion.
Now if they can't live in peace who can?
The attackers come in the night and drag the Amish out, cutting their hair. To explain why this is so disastrous for these people, it is that they will do cut their hair once they are married. The Amish follow the Bible literally and therefore stop cutting and shaving their hair after marriage. Therefore, it is very degrading for them to be attacked in such a way, because they are so deeply religious.
Why is the splinter group so hurtful?
If they want to break away fair enough but then go your own way and leave these people alone. The Amish religion has its roots in Swiss Anabaptists, dating back to 1683. They fled to America where they have taken the Bible literally now living very strict lives.
Many Amish people still speak German. According to their Bible teachings they stop cutting their hair after marriage but cut their moustache because it is a sign of the military. Children’s dolls have no faces because the Bible warns of false idols. The Amish do not play any musical instruments nor take photographs because the Bible warns of graven images.
Yet, people purposely go up to them and take photos just to harass them. It is so disgusting and disrespectful. The people who do this, mostly for a laugh, show themselves up as absolutely ignorant. There are several Amish sects and some of their people do accept rides in cars or use a refrigerator. On the whole though they do not use electricity, radios, TVs or cars. They still travel in their horse-drawn buggies.
When their children become 16 years of age they are encouraged to go out into the world and experience everything which they deny themselves in their community. This time is called Rumspringa and it ends when they are 18. Then the yougsters return, get baptised and live in the community.
Most Amish adults are farmers and it is said tat they possess a lot of land. They still wear the clothes of their forefathers and therefore are called the ‘plain people’. This is because they also shun coloured material. Although the police are more than willing to put a stop to these harassments they are hampered because the Amish do not easily name people or give information. That again is against their way of life. However, the police have managed to arrest men and hopefully these attacks will stop.
