As the Olympics grabs the attention of British people, school sport funding is quietly cut
Everybody in the UK is getting excited, as the Olympic Flame is carried around Great Britain and eventually makes its way to the Olympic Stadium in London. The time draws nearer and even the Sun is obliging at the moment, and hopefully will stay right through the Olympics. It will certainly be a great event and not only will British people have their eyes on the London 2012 Olympics but so will the whole world.
However, the information here is not aimed at dampening the enthusiasm of the people but rather to highlight the wrong doing of the UK Government, yet again.
While everyone will be glued to the TV, or the seats if you managed to get tickets for the Olympics, the Coalition will have quietly cut the £162million school sports program. This was to have suffered a 100 per cent cut but, after an uproar and protest, it received a slight reprieve. It will now be down to a £112million cut over two years. This still represents a 64 per cent cut in funding. The impact will again be unemployment for sports coaches on a massive scale. It will also cut back the children’s PE, physical education, which was raised from at least two hours per week to nine in 2010. That was a short lived positive then!
These days when children cannot play out on the streets, as British children of the past, school sport is even more important. It also teaches children to play with each other, increases their ambition and confidence and so much more. Sport in education also helps build the next generation of sports men and women. Children are indoors far too much these days, often in front of the TV or playing computer games, which isolates them from others and is sedentary..
Of course, it will have no effect on the likes of Cricket, Rugby Union and Hockey as they are mainly played at the fee-charging establishments, that is public schools. Mr Cameron's and his friends' children will not miss out, so they will not care. All their children attend selected schools rather than state schools. Again it will have an impact on ordinary people, children and ultimately their future health and wealth. Once more the UK coalition has chosen a course of action that will widen the gap between the haves and the have nots!
HOW CAN THEY SIT THERE – WATCHING THE OLYMPICS – AND CUTTING UK SPORT DEAD, QUIETLY, AT THE SAME TIME?
Hypocrites
ANOTHER DISGRACE FROM THE COALITION.
