The latest uproar in the US 2012 election campaign seems to involve yet another misquote, gaffe or call it what you will. In the past various GOP candidates have quite literally put their foot where their mouth should be. The Democrats have used such gaffes for political gain. Now it seems the boot is on the other foot and the GOP are trying to gain political leverage after a verbal "attack" on Ann Romney, wife of would be US President Mitt Romney.

This time it is not a quote straight from the mouth of a candidate. Instead it is by Hilary Rosen, who has been labelled by the media as, "a Democratic activist and CNN commentator". It refers to the wife of Mitt Romney with regards to her track record working for a living. In talking about Mitt Romney’s move to use his wife as almost an official ambassador to the women of the US, Hilary said,  “Guess what?” “His wife has actually never worked a day in her life. She’s never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing.”

As retaliation or for political purposes Mrs Romney posted a first tweet on twitter. Ann then went on to stress how hard she works around the home, for the family, blah and blah. She listed personal struggles that many women face these days.

The attack  and the response by Ann in many ways is simply ludicrous. Can she relate to a single parent with three kids and little money? Doubtful. Has she experienced the 9-5 work some Mums face, for a pittance of pay, with a liberal share of racism or sexism thrown in for good measure? Hardly.

However it should all be immaterial. The wives are not up for election are they? Of course the right wing media machine has been quick to attack Michelle Obama in the past. I guess as you reap so shall you sow. Big Mouth Rush Limbaugh was keen to jump on the bandwagon to support Ann Romney. In truth however she did not need support. The statement was merely an observation which it seems the Romney team have tried to use to their advantage. This tactic will appeal to hardline Conservatives but right minded people will surely show more common sense.

In defending her Limbaugh began "Ann Romney’s a role model.” “So she’s apparently wealthy, so she has no way of knowing what life is really….” He stopped before he dug her into a bigger hole.

Few politicians, wives and members of their ensembles deal with the day to day life we ordinary folk do. That does not necessarily mean they have no idea how the other half live. However currently many GOP supporters are quick to point the finger at the Obamas and claim they have wealth and power behind them. Well without it who in America could actually run an election campaign and secure a win? Nobody it seems.

Yesterday, April 12, 2012, Hilary Rosen apologised to Ann Romney saying, "I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended," Rosen, a Democratic operative and CNN contributor. "Let's declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance."

Sounds good to me. Of course those with dodgy policies may still want to hang on to this as a poor political weapon. For what it is worth IMHO there are very few women these days who do not have to work, at least some of the time. They combine work in the home. The also struggle to keep to a budget. They cannot afford hired help nor labour saving devices. Those who can should be glad they are in such a privileged position.
