B. McPherson The plane trees of Paris may be a thing of the past if an introduced fungus continues to spread throughout Europe. The culprit Ceratocystic platani was introduced accidentally to Europe during the American participation in the WWII effort. Munition boxes made of N. American plane trees were shipped to Italy. N. American plane trees are resistant to the fungus but can act to spread the organism. Italy has coped with the loss of many of their trees.More Here
Sarkozy concedes - Hollande wins election
One thing the French Election has not suffered from is voter apathy. Tough times in France have left people seeing the need to vote as vital. A turnout at the polls of more than 80% means that Frances new President will have been democratically elected. First round of French voting 2012
Yesterday the French people went to the polls. It is not fair to say that France did, as many who were entitled to cast a vote in the National Ballot for President live in far flung countries. Sunday April 22, 2012, was the first vote in the election and the French said a resounding NON to Sarkozy. Exit polls aired in other countries before the vote closed indicated that Sakozy would suffer a loss. It seems that many Western countries are in election mode. 2012 will see the US, Canada, France and more go to the polls. A 48-year-old mother, named by the French media as Nadjia Lahsene, has been shot dead outside of her home in Grigny. She was killed yesterday, April 5, 2012.
