On a day when many people across Europe have gone on strike and protested on the streets this piece of news could be seen as a slap in the face of Europeans. Egyptian officials have announced that the EU has agreed a financial package of help for Egypt. Few strings, no jumping through hoops, unlike the way EU countries have to act in order to be bailed out.
Of course the EU will say that it is doing this for many reasons. Philanthropy will probably not be one of them. It will be about business and economies. It will not be about the people of Egypt and Europe. They can preach that until the cows come home but that is simply not true.
So where is the money to come from?
According to the BBC Egyptian officials have said the "European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) would each provide 2bn euros. The remaining 1bn euros would come from EU member states"
Well isn't that jolly. People as we write are protesting on the streets of many European cities. They are being told to put up with austerity so that in ten, twenty or maybe thirty years things will improve. Governments expect that people will endure more of the same but for what? To continue to feather the nests of the Elite?
President Morsi of Egypt said the money was "a strong sign of the EU's support for Egypt's path to development". What of the European countries that are on the brink of heaven knows what?
The Arab Spring so hailed and some would say engineered by the West has backfired. The Middle East is in tatters. Europe is in tatters. People are more than just fed up. Whilst most Europeans will wish Egypt well they will not be happy to know that the EU is using their money to prop up a country outside of the Union.
Don't we all give enough aid around the World already?
