In a throw back to the Second World War the phrase "keep calm and.." has become popular. We have become used to seeing "Keep Calm and Have a Cuppa", but what about "Keep Calm and Rape a Lot"?
Products such as cake tins, trays, plates, cushions, T Shirts and more, are often emblazoned with a "Keep Calm" statement. They are funny, although they have been over-hyped and are becoming rather pass`e.
Products with "Keep Calm and Carry on" or "Keep Calm and have a Cuppa" emblazoned on them are on sale almost everywhere in the UK.
Amazon sells a variety of t-shirts online but one of these products got the Internet giant into hot water. T Shirts emblazoned with "Keep Calm and Rape a Lot" have caused offense and on Friday set Twitter alight.
Controversial T Shirts are sometimes fun and many people own at least a couple. Where you draw the line between a "laugh" and being offensive is often very personal. "Keep Calm and Rape a Lot" was always gong to cause offense but perhaps manufacturers and retail outlet Amazon had not bargained for the strength of feeling it caused. U.S. company Solid Gold Bomb manufactures the t-shirts. Initially Amazon would not comment but the latest news is that the rape t-shirts are no longer on sale.
It is only just March 2013 but already this year there have been many stories involving sex abuse of children, rape and a lack of women's rights in various countries. The "rape" T Shirts are offensive to many people for many obvious reasons. It is not a case of you make your choice when you buy such goods. Walking around wearing one of these T Shirts could cause hurt and offense to rape victims and children, or any person you encounter.
Solid Gold Bomb, market the T Shirts, which also include one with a "Keep Calm and Hit Her" slogan. Solid Gold Bombs twitter account was closed Friday after tweeters bombarded it with numerous complaints. Ultimately the account was closed.
A company spokesperson said "We have been informed of the fact that we were selling an offensive t-shirt primarily in the UK. This has been immediately deleted as it was and had been automatically generated using a scripted computer process running against 100s of thousands of dictionary words.’"
The Solid Gold Bomb company website now carries an apology, however, T Shirts which are sexist and promote violence, emblazoned with "Keep Calm and Punch her" and "Keep Calm and Choke her", are still on sale.
Perhaps the manufacturers' think that punching and hitting is acceptable? Do you?
