Having stirred up a hornet's nest in parts of the Middle East, Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan the chickens are coming home to roost in the USA. American intelligence claims there is a new viable threat against the country's security and it has asked countries with direct flights to the USA to step up security at their airports.
The UK of course has agreed. Security of flights must always concern us all and passengers should feel confident that their flight is as safe as humanly possible. The additional security however will come at a cost and we wonder whether that cost will be passed on to travellers by way of increased taxes.
According to US experts insurgent groups in the Middle East are preparing a new generation of non-metallic explosives; such bombs would not be detected by the usual checks at passport control.
With the UK heavily involved in the Middle East and US led conflicts are Brits also going to be targeted?
A department of transport spokesperson in the UK denied that the new tighter security measures would cause long delays. If you travelled by air from the UK in the wake of 9/11 you must surely remember the long queues and restrictive measures in place at that time. They put a dampener on vacations and actually deterred some from travelling. But as we said earlier in the report it should all be about safety. 9/11 however was an inside job. The spokesperson declined to give much by way of details, saying for obvious reasons. That may be fine and dandy but it may also result in ordinary law abiding citizens smelling a rat even if there is not one present.
Which airports are involved has not been announced.
The Independent carries a full report on the new security plans and the background to the changes. The threat apparently stems from Syria, and the Yemen, and some militant groups operating in the region. Are they groups that not so long ago were being supported by western aid and money?
When the west chose its side in the Syrian war it based its choice on oil, Israel and own interests. The fall of Assad was paramount but surely in retrospect we know that such leaders keep the lid on terrorism.
If you are flying to the USA in the coming days, weeks or months expect tough checks, which could also use racial profiling.
