There is a lot of sabre rattling going on in, and around the issues of Korea. South Korea supported by the U.S.A and other western countries blames North Korea and that country's young leader Kim Jong-Un for aggressive tactics. The North and Kim lay the blame squarely at the door of the west, which has continued to imposed tough sanctions against that country.
A propaganda war has been going on for some years but now both countries seem set to take the world to the brink or war, and maybe beyond. Of course at the last minute both could pull away from action but all too often sabre rattling puts leaders in an inextricable position. They reach a point of no return.
Thursday Sky News reports that,
The US military has flown two B-2 stealth bombers over South Korea in what it called a "deterrence" mission following threats from the North. The two nuclear-capable planes flew a 13,000-mile round trip from an air base in Missouri, dropping a dummy bomb on a target range in the South.
So where do they go from here? Deciding which country is the aggressor is difficult. It will depend upon your nationality, which news source you read and other personal opinions. Perhaps it could be fair to say that the U.S.A and North Korea, on this matter at least, are as bad as each other. Who started the dispute is really immaterial. When kids fall out in the school yard it often does not matter who did what as, what is important is the resolution and what happens next.
The joint South Korea-US military exercise, reported Thursday, has inflamed tensions with Pyongyang, which in turn has threatened to unleash an "all-out war" backed by nuclear weapons. The few diplomatic ties between the north and the south of Korea are gradually being cut. The posturing participants in the war of nerves are standing their ground. Will either back down or are we in for a worst case scenario? Currently it is hard to envisage an easy way out for any of the main players. Each aggressive step makes peace more difficult to reach. Each action takes us closer to all out war. It is time to find a resolution before war becomes the only action possible.
