I am not sure dear reader where in the world you hail from. Here is a government scheme which we want you to imagine is active in your country. The scheme involves the current UK coalition and its attempts to implement austerity. It has previously shied away from any cuts which may touch their top supporters. Now with an election not that far away things have started to change somewhat. Some however believe that it is simply the government paying lip service to appease potential voters.
Here is the terrible current state of affairs with regards to welfare cuts for the sick and disabled in the UK.
The assessment of the long term sick and disabled in the UK is carried out by a French company. Why it is not a UK company is not clear. Could it be that a foreign company will not care one jot for the sick and disabled of another country??
The company is ATOS. It was recently at the centre of an undercover investigation. A damning TV documentary showed those carrying out the medical tests declaring that as long as you can hold a pencil you are fit for work. Once you are declared fit for work you are moved onto job-seeker's allowance. This is a short-lived benefit. When it runs out if you have not found work you will receive a means tested income support benefit. If your wife works full time for instance the odds are that you will receive nothing. She will have to support you.
You may or may not feel that is fine but what if in reality you are not fit for work and need long term care? There are still some safety nets in place but slowly and surely they are being removed.
ATOS has a bad track record in its UK work assessment role. It has assessed more than one person as fit for work who has died shortly after. There have been all too many cases of people told they are fit to work worrying themselves to death. ATOS is a disgrace and so are the government for using this method of health check.
The goverment uses as its excuse the fact that there are some scroungers who will fraudulently claim benefits. The "wide" boys and girls who know how to trick the system. Well we have news for you, the changes will not hit them. They will continue to prosper.
The government hopes that ATOS will be supported by the great British public. Those who believe that the sick are all benefit scroungers will probably do so. Those with an ounce of intelligence will not.
ATOS has a nice little earner for removing people from sickness benefits. ATOS government contracts are worth a fortune. The UK government outsourced many public sector contracts to ATOS and we need to ask why? Somewhere along the line is someone in the UK making big money from this company? In an obscene manner ATOS were even awarded contracts at the London 2012 Paralympics. When you consider what they are doing to the sick and vulnerable of the UK it is a national disgrace.
On Thursday last Iain Duncan Smith, the government minister responsible for all of this, appeared on Question Time. He was loathe to listen to the truth about ATOS and its casualties preferring to spout other politics (see image above).
The UK is in danger of falling for the Tory hype that every person unfit for work is merely a scrounger. We reported on wherebuttheuk early in November the death of Brian Mcardle.
Read it and see what a supposed scrounger looked like. Shame on the UK government.
