Singing sensation Beyonce and husband rapper Jay-Z spent their fifth wedding anniversary vacationing on the island of Cuba. What do you say, lovely? Perhaps not if you are an American.
British tourists often visit the island of Cuba but there are still some travel restrictions preventing American citizens doing so,
The Daily Mail reports that people are outraged that a power couple such as Beyonce and Jay-Z could and would take a vacation on Cuba, "where opressed people" are fighting for regime change. Give me a break. Does the USA have its sights on Cuba as the old leaders die off? If change is forthcoming it should be by and for the people who live on Cuba.
Those in exile are a different matter. Some will have left for mercenary reasons. "Money-men" from the USA had a stranglehold on Cuba before the revolution, are they too looking to return?
For now the rhetoric and excessive reporting, which is painting Beyonce and her husband as rich self-serving devils, is doing Cubans no favours. It may help the jealous nerve that some Americans want to explore in order to incite the poor. Those Republicans who view celebrities as part of Obama's clan may want to take a cheap shot.
In the end it is destructive.
Why would they visit an island with poverty, some have asked? Don't tourists do that all the time? Many times it is tourism which prevents the locals falling into deeper poverty. British Conservative rag the Daily Mail reports, "Since the jet-setters have politically tied themselves to the 44th president and could literally select any location in the world to travel, why would they decide on a such a controversial destination?
The U.S. State Department classifies Cuba as 'an authoritarian state that routinely employs repressive methods against internal dissent' and does not have diplomatic relations with the government, now lead by Fidel Castro's brother Raúl."
Yes the real truth of the matter. It has little to do with the plight of Cubans but more to do with blocking communism and attacking President Obama and his allies. Pathetic.
