Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram has continued its wave of attacks. A self styled radical Islamist group Boko Haram have been responsible for many attacks and terrorist deaths in Nigeria. The latest launched on February 24, 2012 were centred in two Nigerian cities.
Five people are reported to have been attacked and killed outside of a Mosque in Kano. It was timed for Friday prayers. In Gombo a prison was attacked with militants using guns and bombs.
In a call to the AFP the prison warden said, “We are under siege. A large number of gunmen have encircled the prison, shooting and detonating explosives. It is clear they are Boko Haram.” The phone line went dead before any response could be made.
Boko Haram oppose any westernisation of Nigeria and its people. This has meant that a wide range of Nigerian people have been attacked. The group's leader is believed to have been killed in the past but this has done nothing to deter the group.
The attack on the prison took hours to get under control. Boko Haram were attempting to free prisoners. There were also reports of an attack on a police station. In recent days at least a 100 prisoners have been freed by Boko Haram attacks. President Goodluck Jonathon has been unable to restore order since his election in May 2011.
Update: The latest reports have the death toll at the police station as 12.
